A data dictionary is a short explanation about each of the attributes of a dataset that allows anyone less familiar with the data to understand what each column or attribute means. Not all data sets have a data dictionary.

To create a data dictionary, use the following steps:

  1. Import data to Summit or proceed to step 2 for an existing dataset.
  2. Go to the Datasets tab and select the dataset.
  3. Select the Column Properties tab in the upper part of the screen.
  4. Select an individual field on the left.
  5. Fill in a Description for each field in the data set. If the field is a calculated value, it is good practice to include the formula in the description.

Now, Viewers or Editors of the data set can see your description of each field.

Note: You do not need to re-publish the data in order for the description to be saved.
