Work codes represent general categories of work accomplished in a contract. A work code is assigned to each contract in the database. Use the Work Code window to define new work codes.

Each work code is assigned a surface/pavement type and work type. The system uses the work code to make assignments of Road Structure Categories for performance modeling for each road section as it currently exists. You can define as many work codes as necessary to fully describe the type of work performed on a pavement network. You can also add, delete, or edit existing work code definitions.

Each work activity is also assigned a type depending on the scope of the work to be performed. The available work types are as follows:

  • Preventive Maintenance activities: Treatments designed to prevent deterioration of the pavement and hence to forestall the need for routine maintenance or more intensive forms of treatment.
  • Reconstruction Activities: Represent the pavement management section functioning in its first performance period (before rehabilitation). Pavements are considered to be reconstructed when at least a substantial amount (if not all) of the select material associated with the previous performance period has been removed and replaced with new, different, or rejuvenated material.
  • Rehabilitation Activities: Consist of treatments designed to restore or improve the structural capacity of a pavement management section. These activities can range from simple, thin overlays to base repair to removal of poorly performing materials and thick overlays.
  • Routine Maintenance Activities: Considered to be thin pavement surface treatments designed to seal cracks in the pavement surface or improve skid resistance. They generally do not add structural capacity to a pavement. However, they may assist in prolonging a section's performance period.
Note: Road structure calculated values are only developed from data when the work types are identified as "rehabilitation" or "reconstruction."

The Work Code window also defines the ability to assign a road structure category (RSC) to a road section. The RSC is defined by the work code and the pavement thickness of the road section's last rehabilitation or reconstruction contract. The RSC is defined per work code by entering an RSC in the For Thin Pavement column. When a different RSC applies to thick pavement for this work code, then also enter the thickness thresholds where the RSC changes and the RSC for thick pavements.

Work Code Window Columns

The columns in the Work Codes window provide the following information:

  • Comments: This column allows you to enter additional information. Typically, this is a description of the material or what the ID code means.
  • Pavement Type: This column indicates the surface type with which the work activity is concerned.
  • RSC for Thick Pvmnt: This column shows the road structure category (RSC) associated with the work activity when the pavement is thick if the RSC for thick pavement is different than that for thin pavement.
  • RSC for Thin Pvmnt: This column shows the road structure category associated with the work activity when the pavement is thin.
  • Thickness: This column shows the pavement thickness that is the threshold between thin pavement and thick pavement if the RSC for thick pavement is different than that for thin pavement.
  • Work Code Name: This column shows the user-defined identification code for each work activity.
  • Work Type: This column shows the work type assigned to the work activity. See Work Code for the available work types and descriptions.

    Note: Models are only developed from data when the work type is "rehabilitation" or "reconstruction."
